NUEVO LAREDO- THE POLITICS

Unions

Most of the Maquiladora workers in Nuevo Laredo are members of CTM (Confederación de Trabajadores de Mexico). In Nuevo Laredo, the unions are committed to new job creation. Union problems are renowned throughout the State of Tamaulipas, and Nuevo Laredo is no exception.  Both border communities have made extensive efforts to downplay their impact, but insiders insist that union intransigence is still prevalent.

Political Influences

Local government in Nuevo Laredo is controlled by the ruling PRI party and their ties to the unions in the region are legendary.  Most political officials in the State of Tamaulipas rose from the union ranks after years of faithful service.

Assistance

Local governments on both sides of the border are staunchly pro-maquila and can generate significant assistance packages through both states if necessary.  Export assistance is also available from both Federal Governments extensive operations at this major commercial crossing.

Special Consideration

Union pressure is a political reality in Nuevo Laredo, and should be expected in any new start-up operation.  Every maquiladora in Nuevo Laredo, except A.C. Nielson, has some union representation.
